Taeyeon is selected as one of the MCs for the ’1st GaOn Chart Kpop Awards’, which will be held on February 22nd starting 7pm KST at Blue Square Samsung Card Hall in Hannam-dong, Seoul and Taeyeon will be fulfilling her duty as an MC alongside composer cum broadcaster, Joo YoungHoon.
On February 20th, a representative in charge of the GaOn Chart stated, “The leader of Kpop Hallyu fever, Girls’ Generation’s member,Taeyeon and Korea’s leading composer who is also actively involved as a broadcast MC, Joo YoungHoon have been selected as MCs for the award ceremony.”
The winners of ‘GaOn Chart Kpop Awards’ are selected fairly based on the aggregate data of digital music sales and album sales collected throughout 2011.
The award categories are ‘Artists of The Year Award (16 divisions), ‘New Artist of The Year Award’, ‘Best Music Composer/Lyricist of The Year Award’, ‘Best Performer of The Year Award’ , ‘Technical Excellence of The Year Award’, ‘Style of The Year Award’, ‘New Media Platform Award’, ‘Producer of The Year Award’, ‘Oricon Hallyu Singer Award’, ‘Kpop Contribution Award’, ‘International Song of The Year Award’ and ‘Discovery of The Year Award’.
Among the stars who will be attending ’1st GaOn Chart Kpop Awards’ are Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls, Beast, T-ara, Secret, Davichi, Girls Day, Huh Gak, Super Junior, etc.
The award ceremony, which is jointly organised by GaOn Chart and Star News will be televised live through KBS Drama and KBS Joy simultaneously and it can also be streamed through online portal site, Daum on February 22nd at 7pm KST.

On the official website, there are various information about award ceremony, categories, judging process, logo, trophies, etc as well as the list of nominees.

The ‘Oricon Hallyu Singer Award’ will be awarded to the Korean artist who has recorded the highest album sales in Japan last year (2011) based on Oricon’s aggregate sales data. by Oricon. The trophy will be presented to the winner by the Chairman of Oricon Group, Goike Kow during the event.
The recipient for the ‘International Song of The Year Award’ has been selected and the trophy goes to the world-known rock band Maroon 5 who will be revealing their feelings and thoughts on receiving this award through a video message which will be played during the award ceremony.
The 3-hour ’1st GaOn Chart Kpop Awards’ will be aired live simultaneously on KBS Drama and KBS Joy.
Girls’ Generation are on their way to become the first girl group to have surpassed 300,000 copies in terms of album sales this year.
According to the data collected by GaOn Chart, Girls’ Generation’s 3rd album which was released on October 19th recorded sales of 65,048 copies in the month of November alone, taking the total cumulative sales to 293,042 copies so far.
Since the possibility surpassing the sales mark of 300,000 copies is high, Girls’ Generation are set to be the first girl group to achieve the feat this year.
JYJ’s ‘In Heaven’ came 2nd in the November album chart with 62,790 copies, followed by IU’s 2nd album ‘Last Fantasy’ in 3rd place with 44,360 copies and Wonder Girls’ 2nd album ‘Wonder World’ in 4th with 35,051 copies. Lee SeungGi’s 5th album came in 5th with 31,668 copies and T-ara’s EP album ‘Black Eyes’ took the no.6 spot with sales of 30,906 copies.
‘Run Devil Run’ took the pole position on Gaon’s Digital Chart (14.03 – 20.03) which is calculated based on the performance on both the Online and Mobile Chart.
For those who have not heard of Gaon chart, it is the first official music chart in Korea. It has 5 categories, namely the Gaon Chart, Digital Chart, Online Chart, Mobile Chart and Album Chart. The album chart takes into consideration the sales from album distribution companies such as SM Entertainment, Sony Music Korea, Warner Music Korea, Universal Music and Mnet Media. The Mobile Chart is based on ring tone and caller ringtone sales. The Online Chart will be based on online album sales and streaming services while the Digital Chart will be based on the results in Mobile Chart and Online Chart. The online sales results are based on online music sites such as Melon, Bugs!, dosirak, soribada, Mnet, etc. The Gaon Chart, which accumulates all the respective charts results, will be released once in every 6 months while the Album, Mobile, Online and Digital will be released weekly.
