The ‘MBC Korean Music Wave in Google’ concert took place at 11am KST on May 22nd (local time, 7pm PDT on May 21st) in Shoreline Amphitheater, California, USA and was aired live worldwide simultaneously through YouTube.
On the previous day, SM artists performed at the ‘SM Town Live World Tour III in Los Angeles’ held at Honda Center in Anaheim in front of more than 12,000 fans. For the two concerts, the girls had to perform with only seven members as Yuri and YoonA were busy with their drama shoots.
The girls opened their performances with the English version of ‘The Boys’ and they covered YoonA and Yuri’s parts professionally throughout the song. Without an interpreter, the girls had some great time interacting with the audience.
Girls’ Generation then continued to captivate the audience with ‘Mr. Taxi’ and ‘Gee’. During the early part of their ‘Gee’ performance, there was a technical problem with the microphone. Nonetheless, the members kept their focus, showing no signs of panic and wrapped up their performances professionally.
‘MBC Korean Music Wave in Google’ was hosted by Taeyeon and Tiffany with great performances by some of the biggest stars of Kpop such as Girls’ Generation,TVXQ, Wonder Girls, Kara, Beast, MBLAQ, Sistar, f(x) and Super Junior. During Girls’ Generation’s performances the number of viewers rose to more than 119,000, which was the highest figure observed throughout the concert.

On December 21st, the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) released the ’2011 Ringtone Ranking’. Based on the chart, among Korean singers, only Girls’ Generation and Kara were ranked within the top 20 positions.
Girls’ Generation’s ‘Gee’ was ranked 7th and ‘Mr.Taxi’ took the no.10 spot. Kara’s ‘Mister’ and ‘Go Go Summer’ were ranked 6th and 11th respectively. Besides the two songs in the top 10 positions, Girls’ Generation’s ‘Run Devil Run’ was also placed at no.71.
World-known Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan showed his interest in SNSD.
On August 9th, Patrick Chan posted a video on his personal YouTube channel with the caption, “I listen to SNSD’s songs before going to Korea”. In the video, Patrick Chan was seen watching SNSD’s ‘Gee’ music video and dancing to SNSD’s ‘Crab Leg Dance’ while turning his head side to side with a smile on his face.
Netizens who saw the video commented, “That was cute”, “The moves were cute”, etc.
Patrick Chan, who was born in 1990, won the Men’s Single Event at the 2011 ISU World Championships, Men’s Single Event at the 2011 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championship, etc. Due to his achievements, he was named ‘King of the Ice’.
During a performance on August 6th, Sunny’s traumatized and surprised image on stage, in reaction to the loud sound of the fireworks, attracted attention from fans.
Recently, a post titled “Sunny covering chest from shock at the sudden firework” was posted onto an online portal community, together with a video of the performance.
In the video recorded by fans, it was seen that Sunny got a shock from the fireworks that suddenly came off on the stage during their ‘Gee’ performance.
In the post, it was explained, “Because she was so shocked at the sudden fireworks, she could not follow the dance steps for a while”.
Fans who read the post felt very sorry for Sunny while netizens who watched the video commented, “Heard that she was traumatized by the fireworks, it looks like she really was” , “I feel sorry seeing her scared face” etc.
On the other hand, Sunny revealed on a variety show in 2009, that she is still afraid of sound of explosions until now, since her experience of the Gulf War while she was a baby.

On July 17th, according to Japan’s music site, CDV-NET, SNSD’s 3rd Japanese Single ‘Mr.Taxi/Run Devil Run’ was ranked 7th in the Weekly Rental Top 100 Singles Chart for the week starting July 4th up to July 10th.
The single is still popular among music lovers in Japan although 3 months had passed since its official release on April 27th.
SNSD’s 2nd Japanese Single ‘Gee’ which was released on October 20th, 2010 had managed to secure the 25th spot on the chart and this further justified the girls’ popularity in Japan. So far, ‘Gee’ has been on the site’s weekly Top 100 chart for 38 times.
SNSD attended the Rachious Fiesta at Hanyang University Amphitheatre on May 17th. At the university festival, the girls performed ‘Gee’, ‘Run Devil Run’, ‘Oh’ and ‘Hoot’.
The girls mentioned that in the midst of their Japanese activities, they flew back to Korea just to attend the university event. Upon hearing that, the crowd gave a loud cheer to show their acknowledgement of the girls’ efforts and sincerity.
SNSD’s performances were very much anticipated and as expected, they garnered tremendous responses from the university students.

Recently, one of Korea’s most popular online music site, melOn released a top-100 chart called the ‘2000s Music Chart‘, listing top songs from year 2000 to 2010. Besides the fact that it is a chart that reflects the most popular songs during the hottest Kpop era, our eyes were fixed at the top of the table because ‘Gee‘ was crowned the no.1 song of the 2000s.
Seen as a legendary song, ‘Gee”s achievements in 2009 were truly remarkable where it won 9 consecutive K-Chart awards, Digital Bonsang and Digital Daesang at the 24th Golden Disk Awards, Song Of The Year Award and T-Mobile Music Award at the 2009 melOn Music Awards, Bonsang, Digital Music Award and Daesang at the 19th High1 Seoul Music Awards, etc.
Besides ‘Gee’, SNSD’s ‘Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)‘ was also placed within the top 50 of the chart, where it managed to secure the 42nd spot.
The chart painted a thousand words and no one could deny that ‘Gee’ being named the song of the decade was a well-deserved title.
On April 23rd, Samsung invited SNSD for a fanmeeting event and also the premiere of their new IT products in Beijing’s CGV Star International Movie City situated next to the Bird’s Nest Stadium.
At the venue, Samsung showcased their new 3D TV as well as Premium Laptop Series 9 and other various IT products. Besides that, visitors/fans had the opportunity to watch SNSD’s live performances of ‘Hoot’, ‘Oh!’ and ‘Gee’, tried out Samsung’s new products, took part in lucky draws and had photo sessions with SNSD.
During the event, the girls also answered questions about the Samsung products they are using and places they wanted to go in Beijing. In reply to the MC’s question Yuri said that she is using a Samsung printer. Tiffany on the other hand, revealed that she is using a pink laptop, which triggered loud cheers from the fans. About the place that they wanted to go, the girls mentioned the ‘Great Walls of China’.
A representative of Samsung revealed, “Last year, SNSD endorsed Samsung in China and received many good responses. We believe they would largely contribute to the growth of Samsung’s market in China”.

Singer Lee Jung showed his affection for SNSD.
Lee Jung who will be performing on Mnet’s ‘Director’s Cut’ which will be aired on April 1st, revealed that during his time in Marine Corps, SNSD’s ‘Gee’ was his cure for loneliness.
Lee Jung said, “Not long after I went into the military, girl groups became the big forces in the music industry. During my military service, I did renditions of girl groups’ songs to suit my own styles”.
