Girls’ Generation released their 3rd full-length album ‘The Boys’ a few weeks back on October 19th and the album has since exceeded a total sales of 104,161 on the Hanteo chart.
Compared to their second album ‘Oh!’, which exceeded the sales of 100,000 in 28 days, ‘The Boys’ made the mark a week faster. Considering the generally low sales rates of other girl group albums, it is very significant that Girls’ Generation managed to achieve the album sales of 100,000 during the comeback period of top male singers such as Kim Hyun-joong and Lee Seung-gi. Therefore, this again proves the unstoppable power of Girls’ Generation.
On top of this, Girls’ Generation has been topping charts on music programmes such as Mnet’s M!Countdown, Music Bank and Inkigayo, giving indication of their popularity and success of their new album.

2010′s music charts seemed to be dominated by SM Entertainment artists such as SNSD, Super Junior, SHINee, BoA, etc.
According to album sales information site, Hanteo Chart on December 27th, SM artists were ranked very highly in the chart as they have shown their strength in terms of total album sales, singles sales, etc. this year.
SNSD who have released 32 albums and singles since debut in 2007, topped the chart with recorded total sales of 303,442 copies this year. Super Junior and SHINee came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. JYJ took the no.4 spot, followed by Beast in 5th.
This annual aggregate chart calculates the singles and full albums involving the artists in a particular year.
In terms of sales for a single album, Super Junior’s 4th album ‘Bonamana’ is the best selling album with 132,127 copies, followed by SNSD’s ‘Oh!‘ and ‘Hoot‘ in 2nd and 3rd spot respectively. SHINee’s ‘Lucifer’ came in 4th while BoA’s ‘Hurricane Venus’ took the 5th spot. Again, all top 5 spots were occupied by SM artists.
SNSD are at the brink of achieving an incredible record this year as they are getting closer to breaking the 300,000 copies of album sales mark in Korea alone.
According to Hanteo Information System on November 16th, SNSD recorded total album sales of 283,975 copies from January 1st, 2010 to November 15th, 2010.
Hanteo’s Singer Award Chart reflects the album sales in a year rather than the total album sales since a singer’s debut. Thus, for SNSD who debuted in the summer of 2007, only the figure of ~280,000 copies was shown.
Nonetheless, SNSD’s releases in 2010 were supported by strong sales. SNSD’s 2nd Album “Oh!” which was released in January this year recorded a massive sales of 122,828 copies, while 3rd Mini Album “Hoot” released in October recorded sales of 79,858 copies so far. On the other hand, their 2nd Album Repackaged “Run Devil Run” which was unveiled in March recorded sales of 55,897 copies up to November 15th.
The three releases contributed about 250,000 copies to the total. The first two mini albums, “Gee” and “Tell Me Your Wish” released in 2009, sold 5,040 and 5,231 copies respectively this year (within the period mentioned above).
With a little over 16,000 copies more, SNSD would be the first artists to surpass the 300,000 mark after TVXQ, who broke that figure in 2008, mainly due to the sales of their 4th album “MIROTIC”.
The sales of SNSD’s albums are expected to surpass 100,000 copies mark, both in Korea and Japan respectively.
In Korea, SNSD’s music sales is labelled as “daebak (great success)” when the sales exceeds 100,000 copies. SNSD’s album sales figure was expected to go beyond 100,000 copies as soon as they debuted in Japan .The girls are determined to strengthen their popularity and position in the music industry in both countries.
In Korea, SNSD released 2nd Album “Oh!” in January this year, followed by 2nd Album Repackaged “Run Devil Run” in March. On Hanteo Music Sales Chart, from January to August 2010,total sales of 170,775 copies was recorded. Last year, according to infromation on Hanteo, SNSD’s First Mini Album “Gee” and 2nd Mini Album “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)” recorded sales of 82,162 and 86,443 copies respectively, giving a total sales of 168,605 copies for the year 2009.
With the current momentum, the girls are bound to exceed the 100,000 copies mark soon. SNSD’s Japan Debut Single “Genie” which was released on September 8th recorded sales of 45,000 copies in the first week and ranked 4th on Oricon Weekly Singles Chart.
The upward sales trend for “Genie” is expected as SNSD will be releasing their 2nd Single “Gee” on October 20th. Following the release of “Genie” and “Gee”, it will be a grand success for SNSD again if they could surpass the 100,000 copies mark during their first year in Japan.
