The first music award ceremony of the year, the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) seems to be a rather ‘colorless’ and meaningless event, with the absence of some of the big stars in the Kpop industry.
Popular groups who have made their names heard throughout Asia such as SNSD, 2AM, Kara, Beast, T-ara, Davichi, Rain, MBLAQ, After School, Son Dambi, 4minute, G.NA, etc will not be attending the 2010 MAMA.
The 2010 MAMA will be held at The Venetian Macau Hotel’s Cotai Arena in Macau at 7.00pm KST on November 28th. Although their names are in the list of nominees, some of these artists will be appearing on music program, SBS Inkigayo instead.
On SBS Inkigayo which will be aired at 3.50pm KST on November 28th, the list of artists and songs in Take 7 are:
- SNSD (Hoot)
- Kara (Jumping)
- Beast (Beautiful)
- 2AM (You Wouldn’t Answer My Calls)
- Psy (Right now)
- Orange Caramel (A-ing ♡)
This week’s Inkigayo will also feature the debut of ‘SM the ballad’ consisting of Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, SHINee’s Jonghyun, Trax’s Jay, and Jino. They’ll be opening their debut stage on Inkigayo with “Miss You”.
Despite all the hype by the media and netizens, SNSD, Big Bang and Kara will not be participating in Japan’s year-end show, NHK’s “White and Red Song Battle” or most commonly known as just “Kouhaku”.
On November 24th, the list revealed by Oricon indicated that no Korean artists were invited to participate in the 61st edition of the “Kouhaku” which will be held on December 31st, 2010. Among the big names mentioned in the 44-participants roster are all Japanese top stars such as SMAP, AKB48, Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, AAA, etc.
Some of the Korean singers who have made an appearance on the year-end show in the past are BoA, Jo Youngpil, Kaye Eunsook and TVXQ.

Recently, ‘New Korean Wave Craze’ sparks an off-the-stage battle of star cards between SNSD and Kara. SNSD and TVXQ’s Star Collection Cards were launched in December 2009. Besides the fact that these cards are convenient to carry around, the fun and excitement in collecting rare and limited edition cards are among the important contributors to its popularity among fans.
The hot topic about the ‘showdown’ came up following the release of Kara’s own line of star cards, shortly after SNSD’s Volume 2.5 cards were unveiled. SNSD’s Volume 2.5 Star Collection Cards highlight the girls’ energetic and youthful image. Kara’s Volume 1 Star Collection Card has 105 cards in total, giving out a strong and stylish feel about them.
There has been explosive response and interest in these Star Collection Cards, particularly in Japan.
Tony Ahn said SNSD and Kara are the two popular girl groups among military personnels.
On MBC’s “Golden Fishery” aired on October 6th, Kang Ho dong asked Tony Ahn, “Are SNSD really like goddesses in the army?”. To that question, Tony Ahn acknowledged that SNSD are indeed like goddesses to the soldiers and explained, “SNSD and Kara are both awesome girl groups. They boys would try their best to catch the music shows on weekends”, revealing the popularity of the two groups.
He added, “Even actors serving in the military like Gong Yu, Kim Jae-won, Lee Dong-wook, Lee Jin-wook, etc scream when they’re watching music programs, especially Mr. Yang Dong-geun. He is usually very quiet but when Kara came over, he danced with the crowd to the tune of Kara’s songs. I’m already starting to miss my military life”.
On “Live Entertainment Express” section of SBS TV’s “Bae Giwan, Choi Youngah and Jo Hyungki’s Good Morning” broadcasted on September 27th, stars’ selcas (self-cam) were revealed. Members of various girl groups revealed their captivating and pretty faces through selcas which have garnered a lot of interest from viewers.

2NE1′s Sandara Park often comes up with varieties of different concepts whenever she takes selcas. Recently, Kara’s Goo Hara took an up-close shot of herself in a hooded jacket which also sparked a lot of interests among fans and netizens.
On the show, selcas of other stars were also being featured and discussed.
We have heard and seen news that Korean girl groups are currently enjoying massive popularity in Japan. So, what is the reason behind the popularity of Korean girl groups such as SNSD, Kara and 4minute in Japan?
1. Korean girl groups are innocent but professional!
Recently, Japanese newspaper Sankei Shinbun stated the reason for Korean girl groups’ popularity is that they possess not only physical beauty but also great dancing skills and choreography. Japanese fans feel that Kpop girl groups deliver the right type of music they’re looking for and also, the high quality of dance performances.
Japanese girl groups who usually perform their dance routine in uniform costumes do not offer as much features as Korean girl groups who have attractive appearance, beautiful bodyline and dynamic performances. Thus, that is the reason why Korean girl groups appeal to both male and female fans.
2. Korean girl groups = all-round entertainers?
Also, Korean girl groups’s singing and dancing skills are generally more superior than Japanese girl groups. SNSD, for example, are always well-prepared for their dancing and singing performances and the fruit of the preparation can be seen in their performances. The success of Korean artists in foreign market is not a fruit of a day or two’s work.

Due to the popularity of SNSD, Big Bang and Kara in Japan, there will be a special 10-hour long broadcast on Kpop.
On September 17th, according to Japan’s media Sponichi, NHK-FM will broadcast a special 10-hour long program “KPOP 三昧 in Fukuoka” on September 20th.
The person in charge of the production of the program, Matasake Date PD was amazed by the popularity of Kpop girl groups in Japan. He said, “At first, we planned to have drama based music program. The craze for Kpop girl groups is beyond our expectation.”
Fans have sent in their request through the program’s website and on September 16th, about 600 requests were received. Most of the fans requested songs from SNSD, DBSK and the late Park Yongha who passed away in June this year.
Date PD revealed his excitement by saying, “The reactions from fans are overwhelming. I don’t think 10 hours are enough for me to introduce all the songs.”
So, who are the golden girls? It’s none other than Girls’ Generation and it’s their 4th consecutive win on KBS Music Bank for “Oh!”. Earlier this week, the album sales of Girls’ Generation’s 2nd Album “Oh!” on Hanteo Information System have exceeded 100,000 copies.
The golden top and white hot pants the girls put on for today is their 11th outfit for “Oh!” so far. It would be nice if there’s a comedian who would do a parody of “Oh!” and the outfits they’re wearing. I guess Kim Shin Young would be interested.
On today’s Music Bank, Kara showcased their comeback performances of “Umbrella” and “Lupin”, which is the title track of their new mini album, “Lupin”. Among the artists who were featured on today’s show were Girls’ Generation, Kara, 2AM, Jo Hye Ryun, U-Kiss, CN Blue, T-ara, ZE:A, 4Men, AB Avenue, Park Hyun Bin, Trax and many more.
For the fourth consecutive weeks, Girls’ Generation took the top spot with more than 20,000 points. Today, they managed to secure 20,549 points, followed by 2AM with 13,073 points and CN Blue with 7,443 points. Can they secure their 5th win next week? It will be a tough fight as we can expect Kara to be in the top 3 on next week’s KBS Music Bank. So stay tune!
